Ecojustice’s Devon Page talks about the courts, the right to a healthy environment and why foundations need to support new approaches

In 2011, the Catherine Donnelly Foundation approached Ecojustice, Canada’s largest environmental law charity and asked a simple question. “To address the root causes of environmental issues, what would your organization do with a grant of $1 million over five years?” Their answer was to enshrine the right to a healthy environment in Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and through policy and lobbying work. That relationship continues to this day.

In this short audio clip, Ecojustice Executive Director Devon Page and CDF’s Steve Brearton talk about the importance of the right to a healthy environment, how legal work can advance environmental rights and climate justice and why foundations should take a chance on supporting new and unproven ideas and approaches.
